Outside Lands announces cannabis-focused ‘Grass Lands’ area for festival

Outside Lands, a trendsetting festival from the start, will introduce a cannabis-themed area for this year’s event, organizers announced Tuesday.

It’s called, appropriately enough, “Grass Lands.” And it will join the festival’s many other popular themed areas, such as Wine Lands and Beer Lands when the three-day event sets up shop at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco Aug. 10-12.

No, you won’t be able to purchase pot for consumption on the Outside Lands grounds, even though recreational pot is now legal in California. However, “budtenders” and representatives of major cannabis companies will be on hand, and organizers say concertgoers will be able to shop pot products and even order pot to be delivered to their home.

With the addition of Grass Lands, Outside Lands becomes “the first major U.S. music festival to have a curated cannabis experience,” organizers said in a news release.

“Much the way that Wine Lands celebrates Napa and Sonoma as the leaders in U.S. wine production, Grass Lands will shine a light on the area’s importance as pioneers in the cannabis world,” said Rick Farman, co-founder of Superfly, co-producers of Outside Lands. “With recreational marijuana now legal in California, there is so much to discover. We are excited to be the first major festival in the country to offer attendees the chance to learn about the latest in cannabis development.”

Grass Lands will be set up to resemble a town square, with “budtenders” (aka cannabis product specialists) on hand to help visitors learn about a variety of cannabis products. There will be a cannabis-themed farmers market, where visitors can view and smell products, organizers said.

The plan is to “celebrate cannabis by educating festival attendees and exploring the different uses of cannabis and the associated products,” according to a news release. And, yes, there will be a “delivery service partner” on-site.

The area will be curated by Highland Events in conjunction with Another Planet Entertainment and Superfly and will showcase such cannabis companies as Cookies, Ona.Life, Flow Kana, CannaCraft, Kiva Confections, Lemonade, True Terpenes, Mesh Brands, Sunday Goods, Pax Labs, Jetty Extracts, Emerald Exchange, Barbary Coast, and more.

“We’re thrilled to create this partnership at such a crucial inflection point of the cannabis industry,” said Salwa Ibrahim, COO of Highland Events, LLC.

This year’s Outside Lands lineup includes such top musical acts as The Weeknd, Florence + The Machine, Janet Jackson, Odesza, Future, Beck, Portugal. The Man and DJ Snake.
